Do You Need a Web Designer or a Web Developer?

People often ask me if I am a website designer or developer. It’s an intriguing question because it allows for a discussion about whether the person asking understands the distinction between the two roles.

Web Developers

In general, web developers can be divided into two categories: front-end developers, who focus on the parts of the website that involve user interaction, and back-end developers, who handle tasks like making sure the site is accessible online and managing server setups and databases. I have the skills to fulfil both front-end and back-end roles, which is a rare ability among those who are simply referred to as “web designers.”

Website Designers

A website designer’s main focus is on the visual design of a website. This includes creating prototypes, wireframes, graphics, and content, as well as overseeing the development process. They have skills in software such as Photoshop, Fireworks, and Illustrator. In a team setting, the website designer may not be responsible for coding in HTML or CSS, as there are front-end developers available. However, in smaller settings or as a freelancer, they may outsource the development aspect or learn how to do it themselves.

Does it matter whether you hire one or the other?

Although some may focus on the technical distinctions between web designers and web developers, what truly matters is the value they provide to their clients. It’s important to recognise that not all designers are proficient in development and vice versa.

I prefer to refer to myself as a website professional rather than limiting myself to one specific title. This is because I have experience in both design and development. While my background is in graphic design, I am also well-versed in web programming and coding. In fact, other designers have even hired me to handle the technical aspects of their clients’ projects.

When looking to hire someone for website work, I believe it’s more important to thoroughly interview and assess their skills rather than focusing on their job title. This will help you determine if they have the necessary skills for the specific project. Need help coming up with questions? Check out our article, “5 Important Questions to Ask Your Web Developer.”

Ultimately, when hiring a website professional, it’s crucial to make sure they can provide solutions that will give you a good return on your investment. And as always, if you have any questions, I am here to help! 🙂
